The doctor said, “If we don’t get her to the hospital soon, she’s not going to make it.”
This was the third day of a four-day medical clinic, in a community called Bella Vista, along the Amazon River in the northern Peru. A team of 19 students and adults connected to Central travelled to the Amazon together in late July, in partnership with Jaime and Lori Useche and their incredible Amazon Ministries International, our ninth trip to the Amazon River with the Useches. During our week on the river, we served over a thousand adults and children in the medical clinic, helped with a children’s ministry, and also saw 400 men, women and children from the village make a decision to follow Christ at the nightly revival meetings!
Early each morning during our week on the Amazon, hundreds of people would line up outside the village school building, which served as our make shift medical and dental clinic. One of the doctors who went with us was a pediatrician from Little Rock, Dr. Zack Shearer. In the midst of the dozens of children and adults he was treating, in came a grandmother with her tiny granddaughter. Zack knew quickly that the baby was in serious condition and needed immediate care beyond what we could provide in our rudimentary clinic. She couldn’t eat, and her vital organs were beginning to shut down.
After prayer and discussion about what to do, the team knew we had to do something. The next day, Pastor Jaime arranged for a fast boat, taking the baby and grandmother to Colombia for emergency treatment. We trusted that the child would be well taken care of.
The fact that God uses us in his work in the world is a miracle. God doesn’t NEED us to do God’s work, but chooses to use us to accomplish his purposes. When we serve in the name of Christ, all receive a blessing – us, others and mainly, God.
After our group returned home, we received a photo of this beautiful little girl from the Useches.
Her name is Pierini. During her hospital stay, the Useches stayed in close contact with her and her family, making sure they were okay, and then arranging for their safe return home.
Instead of a tragic end to this child’s life, God somehow worked through us to orchestrate a beautiful plan. It is Good News indeed that God chooses to use us to accomplish his work so that we and others might receive a blessings, and that God might be glorified!
