What North American Christians long for is a new Pentecost. Many church goers hope for revival and are looking for the next great awakening. Christian believers are tired of going through the motions of a nominal faith. We have settled for a spiritual experience that is lackluster, dull and dry. For too long, we have been satisfied with the practice of religion that feels empty and lifeless. God wants us to have so much more.
There are glimpses of an awakening of the Spirit in the hearts of people. At Central United Methodist Church, several groups of people have been praying since the fall of 2016. The prayer has been for God’s Holy Spirit to pour out at Central and for the hearts of our people to be awakened to a fresh experience of Jesus Christ. We want to awaken to a faith that is vibrant, alive, vital and active. We want to awaken to passionate, spirit-filled worship, to a deep, rich study of scripture, to lively and vibrant small groups, and to bold energy for missions and service.
Our clergy leadership planned the beginning of the Pentecost season to explore the theme of revival. Our sermon series Awaken begins May 28 and will extend through the end of of June. Each week we will explore the work of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts, moving from Acts chapter 1 through Acts chapter 6. We will learn how every spiritual awakening starts with fervent prayer, asking God, trusting God and waiting on the movement of the Spirit in our lives. God promises this gift to us. It is the promise of the Father in Acts 1:4.
Acts 1:4-5 (NRSV)
While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
The Awaken series culminates in a Revival Sunday on June 25. Rev. J.D. Walt Jr. will preach on Sunday morning and help lead a special Night of Worship on Sunday evening. JD Walt is founder and sower in chief of Seedbed. Seedbed is a twenty-first century renewal movement and media platform whose mission is to gather, connect, and resource the people of God to sow for a great awakening in North America. His ministry is spreading as many Wesleyan Christians join together to pray and sow for awakening. www.seedbed.com. I hope you will mark your calendar for this special Sunday June 25, and join together to pray for awakening.
Awake, O sleeper, rise from death,
and Christ shall give you light;
so learn his love, its length and breadth,
its fullness, depth, and height.
