If you live in Fayetteville, you can’t help but notice there has been a lot of people on street corners recently asking for help. The need is so great it can often feel overwhelming. Sometimes we want to help but aren’t sure that money is the best option.
Blessing Bags are a wonderful way to serve those in need. A blessing bag is simply a gallon Ziploc bag, or any type of bag that you desire, filled with items that are extremely helpful to those that are homeless or just in need. Not only are these bags a blessing to those that receive them, but they are also a great opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about serving those who are less fortunate and being the hands and feet of Jesus to others in our community (Matthew 25:40).
What do we put in a blessing bag? Here are some great options:
· Toothpaste and toothbrush
· Shampoo & body wash
· Pre-moistened hand wipes or baby wipes
· Dry Socks
· Chapstick and hand lotion
· Snacks such a crackers & granola bars
· A bottle of water
· An emergency blanket (you can get these on Amazon for less than $1)
· A list of local resources (print the attached pdf here: HelpResources)
Most these items can be found at the local dollar store, which allows you to do more with less. We also encourage you to take time with your family to write an encouraging note and include an uplifting Bible verse in it and then pray over the bags as well for the people that will receive them. Another great addition is this community help list that outlines local assistance available to those in need.
Handing out a Blessing Bag to those in need gives you an easy and tangible way to meet their immediate needs by providing them with some basic supplies such as toiletries, water, food, and warmth. Blessing Bags are easy to keep in your car so that you have them available when you see someone in need.
Enjoy blessing others!
