The newly elected Building Committee met for the first time on Monday, March 6 to organize their work. Meeting in the sanctuary, they began with an inspiring devotion led by Sally Davis, vice-chair. Dr. Frode Gundersen led us to praise God in our beautiful, classic worship space in worship and song. Dr. Davis gave the charge to create a magnificent space that enables people to experience God in a powerful way. The goal is to preserve the beauty and architectural integrity of the worship space while at the same time increasing functionality and accessibility. Frode taught the group about the history of sacred worship and the importance of worship space to a community of faith. After receiving information from Brian Swain on the work of the Master Plan committee, a time line and calendar was presented. The committee plans to work diligently on the design and present to the congregation by early summer.
The committee is divided into seven sub-committees each with important work ahead of them.
Music Suite Design Committee – This committee will focus on all aspects of the music suite including specification of room design and usage. They will consider traffic flow and handicap access. They will consider interior signage. They will coordinate with the interior design committee to insure a consistent look throughout the entire building. Richard Hardin, Chair.
Organ Committee – This committee will visit and interview organ builders and select the best fit for Central’s new organ. They will consider implications for the organ that will impact building design including organ space, acoustics, humidity needs and temperature level maintenance. New Organist, chair.
Chancel Design Committee – This committee will work with the architects on Central’s most sacred worship space. This group must balance a love and respect for the history of our chancel with an understanding for the need to make changes to improve the functionality for the worship ministry. They will consider all aspects of liturgical and sacramental worship space including the placement of pulpit furniture, the overall look, experience and functionality of the chancel. Doug Prichard, Chair
Interiors committee – This committee will work with the architect’s interior designer to select final finishes for the sanctuary, chancel, and music suite. They will develop a color palette and a cohesive interior look. The committee will present a consistent look aligned with the architectural period and enhance the features of the sanctuary building. Nancy Bittle, Chair
Construction Committee – This committee will interview and select a General Contractor for the project and oversee the construction phase. Their leadership begins once the construction drawings are completed and the congregation gives final authorization to move forward. Ken Hendrickson, Chair.
Communications Team – This committee will work closely with Central’s communication staff to insure there is good communication between the Building Committee and the congregation. Cristy Smith, Chair.
Prayer Team – This committee will wrap the entire process in prayer and organize opportunities for the congregation to participate in prayer. Brenda Gullet, Chair.
Accessibility Advisor – This person has firsthand knowledge of struggles around accessibility and will be instrumental in all aspects of the building design. Missy Joyce, Accessibility Advisor.
