12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
We are part of something greater! As followers of Jesus Christ we are part of the grand sweep of God’s activity alive and working in the world around us. God has accomplished great things through our congregation over the last several decades and God will lead us to do even greater things as we move together into the future. The Greater sermon series begins October 30. We will pause to reflect and celebrate all that God has done.
Through past movements of the Holy Spirit, Central has risen to greater discipleship, greater outreach, greater faith and greater covenant. I want to tell those Central family stories this fall and remember what God has done. We will hear testimonies in the worship services. Susan Williams, our children’s ministry director, will tell the story of how we raised an entire generation of children in the faith. Jody Farrell and Greg Gibson, associate pastors, will tell the story of how God has grown our international and local mission’s programs through loving servants and long term relationships. We will learn the story of the Joash chest (2 Kings 12) from Jack Wilson, pastor emeritus, who introduced it to the congregation in 1988. I love the story of how our congregation grew to greater faith over the years through the covenant giving program. This program is unique and requires us to fully rely on God to guide and fund the ministry. Tony Holifield, pastor emeritus, will share his perspective of the covenant giving program that has consistently fully funded God’s dreams and visions for Central.
The faithful giving of our members over the span of decades enabled us to accomplish great things with God. Our discipleship, witness, faith, and outreach have grown tremendously and this is God’s good work. We will tell those stories and celebrate God’s goodness.
What does God have next for us at Central United Methodist Church? God created Central as a special and unique community of faith. We are distinct and different from the churches across the street and the surrounding areas of northwest Arkansas. Our church leadership discerned God’s guidance years ago and made an important decision to not relocate our church but build out our property on this holy ground. God desired us to remain on this historic property at 6 W. Dickson Street in the heart of downtown Fayetteville.
God has specific work for us to do at this age and stage of our church’s ministry journey. We must faithfully discern what God’s holy work is as we move forward together as a community of faith. Who has God called us to be? Who is God asking us to reach? How will we fulfill God’s dreams for us in the next decade?
What I have learned about God in my personal faith journey, is that God has dreams for us. As awesome as we might think our own dreams are, God’s dreams are always greater than our dreams. We need to learn to dream big dreams with God. God’s Spirit led our church to accomplish great things in the past. God’s Spirit is calling us now, leading us to a new venture – even greater things in the future.
We cannot accomplish any of this through our own strength or our own power, but we can only accomplish it through the power of God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We must put our complete faith and trust in God who can accomplish much more than we could ever ask, think or imagine. We are part of something greater!
