“Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so…”
Chances are you can’t simply read that opening line. You may try, but if you’re anything like me, that all too familiar melody stirs inside your soul and compels you to sing. That same melody may be currently stuck in your head, and it may stay there for hours. For that I say, “You’re welcome”. Why? You are now reminded of a promise of God. He loves you. How do you know? Scripture declares it, over and over, and over again. Behold, the power of music.
Worship is much deeper than simply singing, (For more on that, check out Andrew Brown’s thoughts) but there is a reason we place such high importance and emphasis on corporate singing within the church. Corporate singing has a unique way of unifying and building up God’s church. It allows people from different walks of life to become a body of believers with one singular focus: singing praises to God. Corporate singing also helps remind us of who God is, and how we fit in His story. Take my example from above. One person singing, “Jesus loves me…” is pretty powerful. It may seem childish, or even cheesy, but it still reminds them of the power of God’s love. It centers them on the truth of scripture, that Jesus loves them and everyone. Now, multiply that one person by 20, or 100, or even a few thousand, and you have a lot of people unified and reminded of truth! This is just a small example of the power of corporate singing.
Not only is worship through song powerful and unifying, but it is also a command directly from scripture. Psalm 100:1-2 (NASB) says, “Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing.” And Psalm 47:6 (NASB) is even more direct: “Sing praises to God, sing praises; Sing praises to our King, sing praises.” Scripture tells us over and over that we were made to sing praises to God. It’s a part of our DNA.
So I encourage you, next time you find yourself engaging in corporate song, sing loudly! Shout your praises to God! Be filled with joy! Join together with those around you in declaring His promises and worshiping the one worthy of praise.
