The 20 year old Dodge pickup limped into our parking lot on MLK Blvd a few weeks before Christmas, and the Tomasek family – with nowhere to go and no one to help them – came into our offices at Genesis church.
Mom and Dad and their three boys were weary from their cross country trip to seek a new start in Arkansas. The trip had been ruined by truck problems and a motel stay that took all of their seed money to get set up and begin a new life here.
But God is a god of fresh starts and of providing strength and provision for His children in every circumstance, in miraculous ways that show His love and mercy.
“Behold, I am making all things new” (Revelation 21:5)
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble” (Psalm 46:1)
They spoke of a life in the Northwest where the mom, Michelle, and dad, Jerry, had both worked to provide a good life for their family. However, when their employer abruptly shut down his family business, they suddenly found themselves unable to find jobs fast enough to cover bills –Jerry and Michelle brought their boys to Arkansas after hearing about all the opportunities and jobs in this area.
With their savings now poured into the truck’s transmission repairs, God somehow brought them to Genesis with nothing after someone at the homeless shelter pointed them to a church they knew would help them.
It was immediately apparent that two crucial factors in successfully starting over were present in their words and actions:
- A true faith and reliance on God to rescue them, and
- A strong work ethic and willingness to do whatever it takes to provide for their family.
Pastor Jody Farrell laid hands on the family, and prayed for us as we all held hands together in his office. The prayer was for a miracle – for jobs, housing, strength, and courage.
Jerry excitedly showed me their truck with its’ camper top, expressing he didn’t mind sleeping in the truck bed, but he was worried about everyone else. The shelters didn’t have room for Michelle and the boys and the weather was cold. We reached out to the M&N Augustine Foundation to partner together with Genesis to come alongside them.
Three weeks motel and living expenses were provided and within a week Jerry had found a great job! Praise the Lord!! The boys were enrolled in school, and later a full Christmas was provided for them.
(everything, including beds from Mount Sequoyah Retreat, was provided from generous donations)
After his first paycheck, a three bedroom home was amazingly found – and all deposits were made as they started the New Year with the new life that we had prayed for. A new life they had completely trusted God to provide. And He did! With everything from donated beds, furnishings, and even towels and utensils.

Our loving Heavenly Father is so lavish with His love, so generous with His giving, and so faithful in His protection – that starting over or starting a new path is always possible in His power and strength.
Lord, we are so thankful for this family of faith, and for you allowing us to be your hands and feet in bringing them a hope and a future. Be with them as they move forward in faith and provide Michelle a job, and the boys lots of friends – and all of them peace and joy in their new home. We’ve seen you move mountains and part the seas and fulfill your promise to lead them to still waters and green pastures, and we love you and thank you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
