For over 20 years, the Fayetteville Square has been the site of “Lights of the Ozarks” featuring nearly half a millions LED lights. The lights, along with the accompanying camel rides, pony rides, carriage rides, hot chocolate, and music have become a beloved holiday tradition. It’s a tradition that has attracted thousands of visitors, many of whom drive right by Central United Methodist Church en route to the Square.
Thousands of people seeking light. Thousands of people seeking community. People seeking a reason to celebrate. People seeking hope. People driving right past….a nearly darkened church campus. If you’re anything like me, the wheels are rapidly turning in your mind right about now. What an opportunity! What an opportunity to enhance a great Fayetteville tradition and throw a party – a Block Party. A Block Party featuring the True Light that gives light to the entire world.
On Friday December 16, the Central campus will be lit up and decked out. And in the Wesleyan way, EVERYONE is invited! We’ll have chili, hot chocolate, a photo booth with props, fire pits for roasting marshmallows, cookies to decorate, make-and-take ornaments, pony rides, and live music on the front steps of the Sanctuary.
But the main attraction will be a Living Nativity on the corner of Highland and Dickson. The tableau will feature Joseph, Mary, a variety of animals, and baby Jesus. Now THAT is putting Christ back into Christmas! Children (and adults) will be able to pet the animals, interact with Mary and Joseph, and enter into the awe and wonder of Emmanuel, God With Us.
Our own Pastor Carl Palmer will narrate the Nativity Story twice that evening. For some visitors, it may be the first time they will hear the beautiful story of how God entered our broken world as a helpless baby to conquer sin and death. For others, it may be a call back to the Author and Perfecter of their faith. For everyone, it will be a warm and welcoming evening with an invitation to return for worship on Christmas Eve.
Would you like to be a part of this? Make plans to attend. Begin inviting your friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. Want to do even more? We need many church volunteers to make this event happen. If you would be willing to help, please contact Devon Arredondo at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 307.214.2569 or Ashley Lester at email@example.com or by phone at 479.531.5938.
